Adhyāya 7, Khaṇḍa 19

7.19.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

yadā vai śraddadhātyatha manute | nāśraddadhanmanute | śraddadhadeva manute | śraddhā tveva vijijñāsitavyeti | śraddhāṃ bhagavo vijijñāsa iti ||

"When one has faith, then one reflects. Without faith one does not reflect; only with faith does one reflect. But it is faith itself that one must seek to understand." "Sir, I seek to understand faith."

Meaning today and context

We only think seriously about something we trust is worth thinking about. Faith here is the trust that makes real inquiry possible, not the opposite of thinking.

Chandogya 7.19.1: one reflects only when one has faith (śraddhā); so faith must be sought.
