vihāya vairiṇaṃ kāmamarthaṃ cānarthasaṅkulam | dharmamapyetayorhetuṃ sarvatrānādaraṃ kuru ||
Giving up desire, which is an enemy, and wealth, which is full of misfortune, and even dharma, which is the cause of both, be indifferent to everything.
Not advice to give up ethics, honesty, livelihood or care for others. 'Indifference' here is inner non-clinging, not neglect of duties.
Meaning today and context
The verse goes beyond giving up pleasure and money: even our pride in being good can become a chain. Freedom lies beyond all three of these aims of life.
Ashtavakra teaches tranquillity (upaśama): give up desire, the enemy, and wealth, full of trouble, and even dharma, their cause, and be indifferent to all.
