11.4 Ashtavakra to Janaka

sukhaduḥkhe janmamṛtyū daivādeveti niścayī | sādhyādarśī nirāyāsaḥ kurvannapi na lipyate ||

One who is certain that pleasure and pain, birth and death come by destiny alone, seeing nothing that must be achieved, is free of strain; though acting, he is not tainted.

Accepting what comes is not passivity: still act to prevent harm, seek treatment and help, and take responsible decisions.

Meaning today and context

You can keep working fully without the frantic sense that everything depends on you. Action without that strain is lighter and less binding.

Ashtavakra describes the peace of one with firm understanding (niścayī): one certain that pleasure and pain, birth and death come by destiny, seeing nothing to be achieved, is free of strain and is not tainted even while acting.
