Ashtavakra Gita 12.1

12.1 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kāyakṛtyāsahaḥ pūrvaṃ tato vāgvistarāsahaḥ | atha cintāsahastasmādevamevāhamāsthitaḥ ||

First I grew weary of bodily activity, then of lengthy speech, then of thinking itself. That is why I now remain just as I am.

This describes the inner stillness of a realised person, not an inability to function. If you feel unable to work, speak or think because of exhaustion or low mood, that may be depression: please reach out to a doctor or Tele-MANAS (14416).

Meaning today and context

Janaka describes a gradual quieting: outer busyness, then chatter, then the restless mind settle down. Peace often comes in layers, not all at once.

Janaka, describing his own realisation to his teacher Ashtavakra, explains how he has come to rest: first bodily activity, then much talk, then thought itself fell away.
