Ashtavakra Gita 12.3

12.3 Janaka to Ashtavakra

samādhyāsādivikṣiptau vyavahāraḥ samādhaye | evaṃ vilokya niyamamevamevāhamāsthitaḥ ||

Effort toward samadhi is needed only when the mind is distracted by false identification and the like. Seeing this rule, I remain just as I am.

Meaning today and context

Practice exists to heal a scattered mind. Janaka has seen that once the false identification is gone, there is nothing left to fix; for most of us, that is why practice still helps.

Janaka, describing his own realisation to his teacher Ashtavakra, explains how he has come to rest: formal effort toward samadhi is needed only by a mind distracted by false identification.
