Ashtavakra Gita 12.6

12.6 Janaka to Ashtavakra

karmānuṣṭhānamajñānādyathaivoparamastathā | buddhvā saṃyagidaṃ tattvamevamevāhamāsthitaḥ ||

Performing actions comes from ignorance, and so does ceasing from them. Understanding this truth fully, I remain just as I am.

Not advice to stop working or give up responsibilities; the verse says that quitting action is no more freeing than clinging to it.

Meaning today and context

Running after activity and running away from it can both be driven by the same confusion about who we are. Freedom lies in seeing that, not in picking one side.

Janaka, describing his own realisation to his teacher Ashtavakra, explains how he has come to rest: both doing actions and stopping them spring from ignorance.
