15.13 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ekasminnavyaye śānte cidākāśe'male tvayi | kuto janma kutaḥ karma kuto'haṃkāra eva ca ||

In you, the one, imperishable, peaceful, stainless sky of consciousness, where is birth, where is action, where even is the ego?

This speaks of the Self, not of moral responsibility; it is not a reason to avoid owning up to or repairing harm done to others.

Meaning today and context

Like the sky, untouched by the clouds that pass through it, awareness is not stained by what happens in it. This can loosen guilt and pride alike.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: in the one, imperishable, peaceful sky of consciousness, there is no birth, action or ego.
