guṇaiḥ saṃveṣṭito dehastiṣṭhatyāyāti yāti ca | ātmā na gantā nāgantā kimenamanuśocasi ||
The body, bound up with the gunas, stays, comes and goes. The Self neither goes nor comes. Why then do you grieve for it?
When someone is grieving, acknowledge the loss first; the verse does not dismiss mourning, which is natural and human. If grief feels unbearable, reach out to someone or Tele-MANAS (14416).
Meaning today and context
Bodies are born, age and pass away, but what we truly are does not come and go. This can offer a deeper footing in loss, alongside, not instead of, the grief itself.
Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: the body comes and goes under the gunas, but the Self neither comes nor goes, so why grieve?
