18.38 Ashtavakra to Janaka

nirādhārā grahavyagrā mūḍhāḥ saṃsārapoṣakāḥ | etasyānarthamūlasya mūlacchedaḥ kṛto budhaiḥ ||

Without a true support, agitated by grasping, the deluded keep feeding worldly existence. The wise have cut the root of this root of all misfortune.

Meaning today and context

Restless grasping keeps a cycle of worry and wanting alive. Seeing it clearly is how the root is cut, rather than lopping off branches one by one.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the deluded, without support and agitated by grasping, keep worldly existence going, while the wise have cut the root of this root of all trouble.
