18.43 Ashtavakra to Janaka

śuddhamadvayamātmānaṃ bhāvayanti kubuddhayaḥ | na tu jānanti saṃmohādyāvajjīvamanirvṛtāḥ ||

People of poor understanding meditate on the pure, non-dual Self, but out of delusion they do not know it, and stay unfulfilled their whole lives.

Meaning today and context

Imagining the Self as an idea to concentrate on is not the same as knowing it. Treating it as an object keeps it at a distance.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the dull-minded meditate on the pure non-dual Self, but through delusion never know it and remain unfulfilled all their lives.
