18.45 Ashtavakra to Janaka

viṣayadvīpino vīkṣya cakitāḥ śaraṇārthinaḥ | viśanti jhaṭiti kroḍaṃ nirodhaikāgryasiddhaye ||

Seeing the tigers of sense objects, the frightened ones seeking shelter at once enter a cave, to achieve restraint and one-pointedness.

For addiction or compulsive habits, avoiding triggers and getting professional help are wise; the verse does not argue against them.

Meaning today and context

Running from temptation into strict control is understandable. But hiding is a sign that we still feel threatened; it is a stage, not the destination.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says seekers, frightened at seeing the tigers of sense objects, rush to take refuge in the cave of restraint and concentration.
