18.46 Ashtavakra to Janaka

nirvāsanaṃ hariṃ dṛṣṭvā tūṣṇīṃ viṣayadantinaḥ | palāyante na śaktāste sevante kṛtacāṭavaḥ ||

Seeing the lion free of desire, the elephants of sense objects quietly run away; or, if they cannot, they serve him like flatterers.

Meaning today and context

When craving is gone, temptations lose their power; the same things may still be around, but they now serve you instead of ruling you.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says that on seeing the desireless lion, the elephants of sense objects quietly flee, or, unable to, serve him with flattery.
