18.87 Ashtavakra to Janaka

akiṃcanaḥ kāmacāro nirdvandvaśchinnasaṃśayaḥ | asaktaḥ sarvabhāveṣu kevalo ramate budhaḥ ||

Owning nothing, moving as he will, beyond the pairs of opposites, his doubts cut away, unattached to all things, alone with himself, the wise one rejoices.

This describes inner detachment, not a call to leave family, work or home. For most people it means holding roles and possessions lightly while still caring for them.

Meaning today and context

Joy does not have to depend on having, or on certainty about everything. Being at peace on your own, without needing things or answers, is a deep freedom.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, describes the wise one who owns nothing, moves freely, is beyond opposites and doubt, unattached, and delights alone in himself.
