18.99 Ashtavakra to Janaka

na prīyate vandyamāno nindyamāno na kupyati | naivodvijati maraṇe jīvane nābhinandati ||

He is not pleased when praised, nor angry when blamed. He is not alarmed by death, nor elated by life.

This is about freedom from fear, not indifference to life. If you are thinking about death or feel life is not worth living, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

If praise lifts you and criticism crushes you, others hold the strings. Steadiness means your peace does not depend on their words, or even on fear of death.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the wise one is not pleased by praise or angered by blame, not alarmed by death nor delighted by life.
