Ashtavakra Gita 2.20

2.20 Janaka to Ashtavakra

śarīraṃ svarganarakau bandhamokṣau bhayaṃ tathā | kalpanāmātramevaitatkiṃ me kāryaṃ cidātmanaḥ ||

The body, heaven and hell, bondage and liberation, and fear too: all this is mere imagination. What have I, whose nature is awareness, to do with any of it?

Seeing fear as imagination is not a reason to ignore real danger, your health, or your responsibilities to others.

Meaning today and context

Much of our fear, including fear of punishment or of failing spiritually, is built by the mind. Seeing that can loosen anxiety and guilt that keep circling.

Janaka, newly awakened by Ashtavakra's teaching, says the body, heaven and hell, bondage and liberation, and fear are all mere imaginings; what has pure awareness to do with them?
