Ashtavakra Gita 2.5

2.5 Janaka to Ashtavakra

tantumātro bhavedeva paṭo yadvadvicāritaḥ | ātmatanmātramevedaṃ tadvadviśvaṃ vicāritam ||

Just as cloth, when examined, is nothing but thread, so this universe, when examined, is nothing but the Self.

Meaning today and context

Careful inquiry, not just belief, is what reveals the deeper truth of things. Looking closely at experience, again and again, is itself the practice.

Janaka, newly awakened by Ashtavakra's teaching, uses the image of cloth: examined closely, cloth is only thread; examined closely, the world is only the Self.
