Ashtavakra Gita 5.3

5.3 Ashtavakra to Janaka

pratyakṣamapyavastutvādviśvaṃ nāstyamale tvayi | rajjusarpa iva vyaktamevameva layaṃ vraja ||

Though it is plainly perceived, the universe, being unreal, does not exist in you, the stainless one, like the snake in a rope. Just so, enter into dissolution.

Meaning today and context

Many fears are like a snake seen in a rope in dim light: vivid but not what they seem. Looking closely can dissolve a terror that was never really there.

Ashtavakra tells Janaka that, being pure and unattached, he can simply let identification dissolve: the world, though perceived, is not real in him, like the snake seen in a rope.
