Ashtavakra Gita 9.1

9.1 Ashtavakra to Janaka

kṛtākṛte ca dvandvāni kadā śāntāni kasya vā | evaṃ jñātveha nirvedādbhava tyāgaparo'vratī ||

Things done and left undone, the pairs of opposites: when have they ever ceased, and for whom? Knowing this, through disenchantment, become intent on letting go, free of vows and observances.

Not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities; for most people this means inner detachment while still caring for one's duties.

Meaning today and context

The to-do list never ends; there will always be things done and not done. Seeing that, you can stop postponing peace until everything is finished.

Ashtavakra teaches disenchantment (nirveda): the opposites of done and undone never come to an end for anyone, so let go, free even of vows.
