Avadhuta Gita 1.13

1.13 Dattatreya

You were not born, you have not died; you have never had a body. 'All is Brahman': this, scripture declares in many ways.

Not for someone freshly grieving as a reason to stop mourning: acknowledge the loss first. The verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die; if you feel hopeless, call Tele-MANAS 14416. Not a reason to neglect your body, health, family, work or treatment; it is about identity, not self-contempt.

Meaning today and context

Fear of death clings to the body and its story. The verse points to an awareness that was never born and does not end, which can soften the dread of death without denying that life and the body matter.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta tells the listener he was never born, never dies and never had a body, citing scripture that all is Brahman.
