Birth and death are not yours, nor is the mind; nor bondage and liberation, nor good and bad. Why do you weep, dear child? Name and form are neither yours nor mine.
Not for someone freshly grieving as a reason to stop mourning: acknowledge the loss first. The verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die; if you feel hopeless, call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
The verse speaks with tenderness, like a parent to a crying child. It does not scold the tears; it reminds you that the deepest part of you is not damaged by what you are going through.
Dattātreya the Avadhūta gently addresses the listener as 'dear child' and asks why he weeps, since birth, death, mind, bondage and freedom are not his.
