Avadhuta Gita 1.63

1.63 Dattatreya

You have no mother, no father, no kinsman; no wife, no son, no friend; no one on your side and no one against you. Why, then, this burning in your mind?

This is not advice to disown family or stop caring for them. If you are grieving someone, the loss is real; the verse offers a deeper footing, not a dismissal of love.

Meaning today and context

When relationships hurt, the pain can feel like it defines us. The verse reminds us that who we are is deeper than any role in a family or quarrel. It is about the Self, not about cutting people off.

In a longer metre, Dattatreya tells the listener that at the level of the Self he has no mother, father, kin, wife, son or friend, no ally or opponent, and asks why then his mind is so tormented.
