Avadhuta Gita 1.74

1.74 Dattatreya

tritayaturīyaṃ nahi nahi yatra vindati kevalamātmani tatra | dharmādharmau nahi nahi yatra baddho muktaḥ kathamiha tatra ||

Where there are no three states and no fourth, no, none, there one finds the Self alone. Where there is no dharma and no adharma, no, none, how can anyone there be bound or free?

Going 'beyond dharma and adharma' describes the realised state; it is never an excuse for harming others or ignoring right conduct.

Meaning today and context

This describes the state of one already free, beyond all categories. It is not a licence to drop ethics; for the rest of us right and wrong remain real guides.

Dattatreya says that where there are no three states and no fourth, and no dharma or adharma, one finds the Self alone, and there can be no talk of bound or free.
