Whether the teacher is a child, someone given to sense pleasures, a fool, a servant or a householder, nothing of what such a guru says should be ignored. Does anyone throw away a gem because it has fallen into filth?
Valuing a teaching from anyone does not mean trusting or obeying a teacher who harms or exploits; for abuse or danger, 112 / 181.
Meaning today and context
Wisdom can come from unlikely people. Judge a lesson by its truth, not by the status, age or habits of the one who gives it.
Dattatreya opens the second chapter: the guru's teaching is to be valued whoever the teacher may outwardly seem to be.
