Avadhuta Gita 2.31

2.31 Dattatreya

nirāmayaṃ niṣpratimaṃ nirākṛtiṃ nirāśrayaṃ nirvapuṣaṃ nirāśiṣam | nirdvandvanirmohamaluptaśaktikaṃ tamīśamātmānamupaiti śāśvatam ||

Free of disease, beyond comparison, without form, without support, without body, without desire, beyond the pairs of opposites, free of delusion, of undiminished power: that Lord, the eternal Self, he reaches.

These verses describe the state of one already free; they are not a licence to drop ethics, practice, or care for one's body, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

Whatever happens to body and circumstance, the text points to a Self that is not sick, not lacking, not torn between opposites. Remembering this can be a quiet strength, alongside caring for body and life.

Dattatreya begins a series of verses with the refrain 'he reaches that Lord, the eternal Self', describing what the Self is free of.
