Avadhuta Gita 2.37

2.37 Dattatreya

susaṃyamī vā yadi vā na saṃyamī susaṃgrahī vā yadi vā na saṃgrahī | niṣkarmako vā yadi vā sakarmakastamīśamātmānamupaiti śāśvatam ||

Whether well restrained or not restrained, whether one gathers possessions or does not, whether without action or engaged in action: that Lord, the eternal Self, he reaches.

These verses describe the state of one already free; they are not a licence to drop ethics, practice, or care for one's body, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

This describes the state of one already free, not a licence to drop discipline or ethics. It does say that realisation is not reserved for monks: a householder with work and possessions is not excluded.

In the refrain series, Dattatreya says outward discipline or its lack does not decide who reaches the Self.
