Avadhuta Gita 3.10

3.10 Dattatreya

niṣpāpapāpadahano hi hutāśano'haṃ nirdharmadharmadahano hi hutāśano'ham | nirbandhabandhadahano hi hutāśano'haṃ jñānāmṛtaṃ samarasaṃ gaganopamo'ham ||

I am the fire that burns both sin and sinlessness; the fire that burns both dharma and its absence; the fire that burns both bondage and freedom from bondage. I am the nectar of knowledge, the same throughout, like the sky.

This describes the state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics, practice, or care for body, family and work.

Meaning today and context

For someone weighed down by guilt, this points to an identity deeper than any record of good and bad. It describes the freedom of the realised, and is no excuse for harming anyone.

Dattatreya continues the fire image: he is the sacrificial fire that consumes sin and sinlessness, dharma and its absence, bondage and freedom.
