Why do you weep, friend? No stages of life are yours. Why do you weep, friend? No minds are yours. Why do you weep, friend? The senses are not yours. I am the nectar of knowledge, the same throughout, like the sky.
If you are grieving, your tears are natural and the loss is real; the verse speaks of the deathless Self and does not dismiss mourning. If grief feels unbearable, call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
When the mind is troubled or the senses fail with illness or age, the verse reminds you that you are the one who knows them, not the mind or senses themselves.
Dattatreya continues the refrain: why weep, friend, when no age, no mind and no senses are truly yours?
