Avadhuta Gita 4.1

4.1 Dattatreya

nāvāhanaṃ naiva visarjanaṃ vā puṣpāṇi patrāṇi kathaṃ bhavanti | dhyānāni mantrāṇi kathaṃ bhavanti samāsamaṃ caiva śivārcanaṃ ca ||

There is no invoking of the deity and no sending it away; how can there be flowers and leaves? How can there be meditations and mantras, and how the worship of Shiva, who is beyond same and not-same?

The verse speaks from the state of one who sees no separation between worshipper and worshipped. It does not mock or forbid worship; prayer and ritual remain meaningful for those who practise them.

Meaning today and context

When the divine is known as one's own being, present everywhere, there is nowhere to call it from and nowhere to send it back. This describes the realised state; for most of us, worship is still a way toward that seeing.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says that for one who knows himself as the one reality, the steps of ritual worship have no place.
