Avadhuta Gita 5.1

5.1 Dattatreya

oṃ iti gaditaṃ gaganasamaṃ tatna parāparasāravicāra iti | avilāsavilāsanirākaraṇaṃ kathamakṣarabindusamuccaraṇam ||

'Om' is said to be like the sky; in it there is no weighing of higher and lower essence. For That which rules out both play and its absence, how can there be the utterance of syllable and dot?

Meaning today and context

Om is a pointer, not the thing it points to. Chanting can turn the mind toward a vast stillness, but that stillness is beyond the sound itself.

In chapter 5, Dattatreya speaks to his own mind with the refrain 'why do you weep?'; here he says Om itself points to a sky-like reality that its letters and sounds cannot capture.
