Avadhuta Gita 5.15

5.15 Dattatreya

aniketakuṭī parivārasamaṃ ihasaṅgavisaṅgavihīnaparam | iha bodhavibodhavihīnaparaṃ kimu rodiṣi mānasi sarvasamam ||

The homeless one's hut is the same as a household; here the supreme is free of attachment and non-attachment; here the supreme is free of knowing and not knowing. Why do you weep, O mind? All is one and the same.

This is not advice to leave home or family. The verse says the free person sees home and hermitage as the same.

Meaning today and context

Freedom does not depend on whether we live in a family home or alone. One can be free while caring for a household, and bound while living in a hut.

In chapter 5, Dattatreya speaks to his own mind with the refrain 'why do you weep?'; he says that to one who is free, a homeless wanderer's hut and a family home are the same; the supreme is beyond attachment and non-attachment.
