Avadhuta Gita 5.16

5.16 Dattatreya

avikāravikāramasatyamiti avilakṣavilakṣamasatyamiti | yadi kevalamātmani satyamiti kimu rodiṣi mānasi sarvasamam ||

Change and the changeless are unreal; the marked and the unmarked are unreal. If only the Self is real, why do you weep, O mind? All is one and the same.

If you are grieving or in pain, your tears are natural and right; this verse does not tell you to stop mourning. It points to a steadiness beneath sorrow. If the pain feels unbearable, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Circumstances shift and so do our ideas about what lasts. What remains true through all of it is the awareness that we are. Leaning on that can make loss and change less frightening.

In chapter 5, Dattatreya speaks to his own mind with the refrain 'why do you weep?'; he says change and changelessness, the marked and unmarked, are unreal: only the Self is real.
