Avadhuta Gita 5.19

5.19 Dattatreya

na hi mokṣapadaṃ na hi bandhapadaṃ na hi puṇyapadaṃ na hi pāpapadam | na hi pūrṇapadaṃ na hi riktapadaṃ kimu rodiṣi mānasi sarvasamam ||

There is no state of liberation, no state of bondage; no state of merit, no state of sin; no state of fullness, no state of emptiness. Why do you weep, O mind? All is one and the same.

This describes the state of one who is already free. It is not a licence to drop ethics, duties, or care for others; for most people, right conduct is the ground on which such freedom grows.

Meaning today and context

At the deepest level we are not a scorecard of sins and merits, nor a project that is either finished or empty. That can lift the weight of constant self-judgement.

In chapter 5, Dattatreya speaks to his own mind with the refrain 'why do you weep?'; he says there is no state of liberation or bondage, merit or sin, fullness or emptiness.
