Avadhuta Gita 5.2

5.2 Dattatreya

iti tattvamasiprabhṛtiśrutibhiḥ pratipāditamātmani tattvamasi | tvamupādhivivarjitasarvasamaṃ kimu rodiṣi mānasi sarvasamam ||

Thus by scriptures such as 'tat tvam asi' it is taught that in the Self you are That. You are free of every limiting condition, the same in all. Why do you weep, O mind? All is one and the same.

If you are grieving or in pain, your tears are natural and right; this verse does not tell you to stop mourning. It points to a steadiness beneath sorrow. If the pain feels unbearable, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

When we weep, we feel small, separate and alone. The verse reminds us that beneath every role and circumstance we are one with what is whole, which can hold us even in sorrow.

In chapter 5, Dattatreya speaks to his own mind with the refrain 'why do you weep?'; he recalls the Upanishadic teaching 'tat tvam asi', you are That, and asks his mind why it weeps.
