Avadhuta Gita 5.27

5.27 Dattatreya

iha dharmavidharmavirāgataramiha vastuvivastuvirāgataram | iha kāmavikāmavirāgataraṃ kimu rodiṣi mānasi sarvasamam ||

Here is a greater dispassion toward dharma and adharma; here, a greater dispassion toward thing and no-thing; here, a greater dispassion toward desire and desirelessness. Why do you weep, O mind? All is one and the same.

This describes the state of one who is already free. It is not a licence to drop ethics, duties, or care for others; for most people, right conduct is the ground on which such freedom grows.

Meaning today and context

The deepest dispassion is not just turning from pleasures; it is not clinging even to being good or being detached. This describes the state of the free, not a licence to drop ethics.

In chapter 5, Dattatreya speaks to his own mind with the refrain 'why do you weep?'; he speaks of a dispassion that goes beyond even dharma and adharma, things and no-things, desire and its absence.
