sukhaduḥkhavivarjitasarvasamamiha śokaviśokavihīnaparam | guruśiṣyavivarjitatattvaparaṃ kimu rodiṣi mānasi sarvasamam ||
Free of pleasure and pain, the same in all; here the supreme is without grief and the end of grief; the supreme reality is free of guru and disciple. Why do you weep, O mind? All is one and the same.
If you are grieving or in pain, your tears are natural and right; this verse does not tell you to stop mourning. It points to a steadiness beneath sorrow. If the pain feels unbearable, call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
Pleasure and pain, grief and relief come and go in us; what we are is not made of them. This does not deny the pain, but it means pain is not the whole of who we are.
In chapter 5, Dattatreya speaks to his own mind with the refrain 'why do you weep?'; he says reality is beyond pleasure and pain, grief and its end, and even the relation of guru and disciple.
