bahudhā śrutayaḥ pravadanti yato viyadādiridaṃ mṛgatoyasamam | yadi caikanirantarasarvasamaṃ kimu rodiṣi mānasi sarvasamam ||
Since the scriptures declare in many ways that this world, beginning with space, is like the water of a mirage; if all is one, unbroken and the same, why do you weep, O mind? All is one and the same.
Seeing the world as a mirage is a teaching about clinging, not a reason to neglect your body, family, work or treatment. If you are grieving or in pain, your tears are natural and right; this verse does not tell you to stop mourning. It points to a steadiness beneath sorrow. If the pain feels unbearable, call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
We chase things that look like water in the desert and weep when they vanish. The verse asks us to see the mirage as a mirage, while still living carefully in the world we share.
In chapter 5, Dattatreya speaks to his own mind with the refrain 'why do you weep?'; he says the scriptures declare in many ways that the world, from space onward, is like a mirage.
