Avadhuta Gita 6.13

6.13 Dattatreya

tṛtīyaṃ na hi duḥkhasamāgamanaṃ na guṇāddvitīyasya samāgamanam | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ sthaviraśca yuvā ca śiśuśca katham ||

There is no coming of sorrow as a third; there is no coming of a second out of the gunas. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be the old man, the youth and the child?

Meaning today and context

The body passes through childhood, youth and old age, but the awareness that knows each stage does not age. For someone feeling the weight of years, this can be a source of steadiness.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how there could be old age, youth and childhood. The first line is obscure in the text.
