Avadhuta Gita 6.17

6.17 Dattatreya

yadi mohaviṣādavihīnaparo yadi saṃśayaśokavihīnaparaḥ | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivamahameti mameti kathaṃ ca punaḥ ||

If the Supreme is beyond delusion and dejection, if it is beyond doubt and grief, if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how could 'I' and 'mine' come back again?

Meaning today and context

Much of our worry, doubt and grief is built around 'I' and 'mine'. Seeing that our deepest self is not that small owner can bring real relief, even while we keep caring for people and things.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how, for one free of delusion and grief, 'I' and 'mine' could return.
