Avadhuta Gita 6.5

6.5 Dattatreya

gatakāmavikāmavibheda iti gataceṣṭaviceṣṭavibheda iti | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ bahirantarabhinnamatiśca katham ||

The distinction between desire and freedom from desire is gone; the distinction between striving and not striving is gone. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can the mind think of outside and inside as different?

Even 'having no desires' can become one more goal to chase. The verse points beyond both wanting and the effort not to want, to a self that is not divided into inner and outer.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how the mind could split the world into inside and outside.
