Avadhuta Gita 8.2

8.2 Krishna

kāmairahatadhīrdānto mṛduḥ śucirakiñcanaḥ | anīho mitabhukśāntaḥ sthiro maccharaṇo muniḥ ||

His mind is not struck down by desires; he is self-controlled, gentle, pure, owning nothing, free of craving, eating in moderation, peaceful, steady, taking refuge in me: such is the sage.

Owning nothing and eating sparingly describe a renunciate's ideal; this is not advice to give up one's livelihood, nor dietary advice.

Meaning today and context

A good life does not need much: a mind not pushed around by wants, gentleness, moderation, steadiness and trust in something higher. These are qualities anyone can grow, in any walk of life.

Dattatreya lists the qualities of the true sage (muni); these three verses also appear in the Bhagavata Purana (11.11.29-31), where Krishna speaks them, which explains 'taking refuge in me'; here, self-control, simplicity and peace.
