daṇḍo damayatāmasmi nītirasmi jigīṣatām | maunaṃ caivāsmi guhyānāṃ jñānaṃ jñānavatāmaham ||
Of those who restrain I am the rod; of those who seek to win I am wise policy. Of secrets I am silence, and of the knowing I am knowledge.
'The rod' refers to a ruler's lawful power to restrain wrongdoing. It is not a justification for beating, punishing or controlling anyone at home, at school or anywhere else.
Meaning today and context
To win, good judgement matters more than force; to keep a confidence, silence is the strongest guard. Knowledge itself, in anyone who has it, is sacred.
Krishna names himself as the rod of those who restrain, the strategy of those who seek victory, the silence of secrets and the knowledge of the knowers.
