Krishna speaks to a warrior in a war that, in the epic, could no longer be avoided. Never use this verse to justify violence, or to see yourself as an instrument of destruction against anyone. Its lasting lesson is humility: do not claim as your own what was set in motion by far larger forces.

'Be merely the instrument' is a lesson in humility, especially in success. When things go well, much of the result came from forces far larger than us: others' work, circumstances, grace. Do your part fully, and don't make yourself the author of everything.
Krishna tells Arjuna to rise and win glory: the outcome is already decided by him, and Arjuna is to be only the instrument.
