Bhagavad Gita 12.18

12.18 Krishna to Arjuna

samaḥ śatrau ca mitre ca tathā mānāvamānayoḥ | śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu samaḥ saṅgavivarjitaḥ ||

The same toward enemy and friend, and in honour and dishonour, the same in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, free from attachment,

Being even toward an enemy is an inner state, not a reason to trust someone who has harmed you or to stop protecting yourself and others.

Meaning today and context

Insults and praise, rivals and friends: they still happen, but they don't have to decide your inner state. Evenness lets you respond wisely instead of reacting.

Krishna continues: the same toward enemy and friend, in honour and dishonour, in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, free from attachment.
