Bhagavad Gita 12.19

12.19 Krishna to Arjuna

tulyanindāstutirmaunī saṃtuṣṭo yena kena cit | aniketaḥ sthiramatirbhaktimānme priyo naraḥ ||

The same in blame and praise, silent, content with whatever comes, homeless, steady in mind, full of devotion: that person is dear to me.

'Homeless' describes the wandering renunciant of Shankara's reading. It is not advice to leave one's home or family; for a householder it can mean not clinging to possessions and status.

Meaning today and context

Criticism and praise lose their grip when your sense of worth doesn't depend on them. Speaking less and needing less are quiet strengths anyone can practise.

The portrait continues: the same in blame and praise, restrained in speech, content with whatever comes, without a fixed home, steady in mind.
