Bhagavad Gita 14.25

14.25 Krishna to Arjuna

mānāvamānayostulyastulyo mitrāripakṣayoḥ | sarvārambhaparityāgī guṇātītaḥ sa ucyate ||

The same in honour and dishonour, the same toward the side of friend and foe, having given up all undertakings: such a one is said to have gone beyond the guṇas.

Shankara reads this as the renunciate's way of life; it is not advice to abandon family or responsibilities. Being equal to friend and foe also does not mean ignoring danger or staying with someone who harms you.

Meaning today and context

Holding the same goodwill toward those who support and those who oppose you is rare and freeing. Respect or insult from others then no longer decides your inner state.

Krishna completes the description: one equal in honour and dishonour, to friend and foe, who has given up all self-initiated undertakings, is called beyond the guṇas.
