Bhagavad Gita 18.2

18.2 Krishna to Arjuna

kāmyānāṃ karmaṇāṃ nyāsaṃ saṃnyāsaṃ kavayo viduḥ | sarvakarmaphalatyāgaṃ prāhustyāgaṃ vicakṣaṇāḥ ||

The Blessed Lord said: The sages understand renunciation as laying aside actions driven by desire. The discerning call the giving up of the fruits of all actions relinquishment.

Renunciation here means giving up attachment and claim over results, not giving up work, family or responsibilities. It is not advice to quit a job or walk away from people who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

There are two ways to let go: drop the things you do only out of wanting, and, in everything you still do, drop your grip on how it turns out. The second can be practised in any job or household.

Krishna answers by quoting two views of the wise: renunciation is giving up actions done from desire, and relinquishment is giving up the fruits of all actions.
