Bhagavad Gita 18.28

18.28 Krishna to Arjuna

ayuktaḥ prākṛtaḥ stabdhaḥ śaṭho naikṛtiko'lasaḥ | viṣādī dīrghasūtrī ca kartā tāmasa ucyate ||

Undisciplined, unrefined, stubborn, deceitful, spiteful, lazy, despondent and procrastinating: such a doer is called tamasic.

Low mood, lethargy and putting things off can be signs of depression, not of bad character. This list is not a label to put on anyone; if these feel familiar and persistent, please seek support (Tele-MANAS 14416).

Meaning today and context

Putting things off, sulking and stubbornness feed each other and drag work down. Recognising the pattern is the first step to breaking it, one small task at a time.

Krishna describes the tamasic doer: undisciplined, unrefined, stubborn, deceitful, malicious, lazy, despondent and procrastinating.
