Bhagavad Gita 18.30

18.30 Krishna to Arjuna

pravṛttiṃ ca nivṛttiṃ ca kāryākārye bhayābhaye | bandhaṃ mokṣaṃ ca yā vetti buddhiḥ sā pārtha sāttvikī ||

The understanding that knows engagement and withdrawal, what is to be done and not to be done, fear and fearlessness, bondage and liberation: that understanding, Partha, is sattvic.

Meaning today and context

Clear judgement knows when to step in and when to step back, which fears are real and which are not, and what will tie you down versus set you free. That is the skill to cultivate before big decisions.

Krishna defines sattvic understanding: it knows when to act and when to refrain, what should and should not be done, what to fear and not fear, what binds and what frees.
