Bhagavad Gita 18.39

18.39 Krishna to Arjuna

yadagre cānubandhe ca sukhaṃ mohanamātmanaḥ | nidrālasyapramādotthaṃ tattāmasamudāhṛtam ||

That happiness which deludes the self both at the beginning and in its sequel, arising from sleep, sloth and heedlessness, is declared to be tamasic.

Tiredness, oversleeping and loss of motivation can be signs of depression or illness, not laziness. This verse is not a judgement on anyone in that state; please seek medical or mental-health support (Tele-MANAS 14416).

Meaning today and context

Some comfort is just numbness: drifting, avoiding, letting days blur. It never really satisfies, then or later. Gentle structure and small acts of attention can lift us out of it.

Krishna defines tamasic happiness: deluding the self at the beginning and in the end, arising from sleep, sloth and heedlessness.
