Bhagavad Gita 18.44

18.44 Krishna to Arjuna

kṛṣigorakṣyavāṇijyaṃ vaiśyakarma svabhāvajam | paricaryātmakaṃ karma śūdrasyāpi svabhāvajam ||

Farming, tending cattle and trade are the work of the vaiśya, born of his nature; work that takes the form of service is likewise the śūdra's, born of his nature.

The Gita says these duties arise from guṇa and svabhāva (qualities and nature), not from birth (compare 4.13). Never use this verse to assign anyone a station, occupation or worth by birth, or to justify caste discrimination. Service is not lesser work and no one is born to serve others; this verse must never be used to demean any community or justify untouchability or forced labour.

Meaning today and context

Farming, trade and service sustain everyone, and the Gita places them in the same frame as every other work. No form of honest work is lesser, and none is fixed on a person by birth.

Krishna names the work of the vaiśya and the śūdra, both said to arise from nature.
